River City Church—more than anything—is a church that believes the Bible. Paul writes, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” Thus, we joyfully embrace the Word of God as our inerrant, final authority.
What does ‘Evangelical’ mean?
The term ‘evangelical’ can conjure up all kinds of images. Smarmy televangelists, angry politicians… But really, the term evangelical simply means committed to sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. And Jesus commands his followers to “go and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20) Thus, we are an “evangelical” church because we believe God’s Word commands us to be on a mission to spread the good news, which calls all people to repent of sin and believe in Jesus Christ as the only Savior. (Mark 1:14-15, Acts 4:12)
What does ‘Presbyterian’ mean?
Presbyterians believe the Bible teaches that churches are to be lead by elders—not just the pastor or by a vast church hierarchy. Elders, then, are people from within the congregation who are mature in the faith and are chosen by the congregation to lead the congregation (Titus 1:5-9, 1 Timothy 3:2-6). And the original Greek word for “elder” is presbyter, which is where we get the hard-to-spell word “Presbyterian.”
